Blacksocks Sockscription review

The original subscription service is the Blacksocks Sockscription. The backstory is now folklore when founder Sami Liechti was invited to a Japanese Tea Ceremony. Legend has it, Sami had to remove his shoes for the ceremony as is the custom only to find his socks didn’t match and one had holes. That embarrassment was inspiration enough to start a company that would solve that problem and in 1999, Blacksocks was born. Fast forward to 2015 and Blacksocks have 50,000 customers in 75 countries. That’s a lot of customers so you can bet the socks are going to be good.

Now isn’t like most subscriptions websites, it’s a fully stocked online store so you can buy all the different socks you’ll ever need. I’ve known about them for a long time, so I thought it was time to try the subscription as that is my preferred way of shopping at the moment. I wasn’t expecting to be able to choose from a huge selection of socks and this enables you to try before you sign up for a long term subscription, so that’s what I did. Within a couple of days I was the proud owner of three pairs of socks, a pair of black business socks with a striped sole, a pair of striped, and a luxury pair of cashmere and silk.

Black business socks with striped sole

Even when you have to wear black socks, there is nothing to say you can’t add a spice of personality subtle. Traditionally this is with different coloured heel and toe sections, but these cool business socks have funky stripes that remind me of the iconic Paul Smith stripes. One closer examination I found not only these, but all the Blacksocks socks I bought were made in Italy. This gave me the reassurance they aren’t mass produced in the far east.

The weave on the fabric is very fine. This not only gives a very silky finish to look at, but more importantly, makes these sock extremely comfortable against your skin. So fine in fact, that I was worried that you might be able to feel the stitching at the toes. These concerns were short lived when actually wearing business shoes because you simply can’t feel any stitching.

These Business light socks made from high-quality, mercerised cotton are subtle and astonishing. The stripes disappear discreetly into your shoes and will only appear when you want them to.

Striped light business sock

Sometimes subtle just doesn’t express how you feel. For those days there are Blacksocks fully striped socks. These take the stripe theme to the next level. The detail of the stripes is surprisingly detailed, but each and every colour is clearly defined giving an intense pattern close up, without being too much when viewed from normal distances. A funky sock that manages to mix it with the full on business socks with no issues.

The striped socks are made with the same silky smooth fabric blend as the striped sole socks, so the comfort will be the same. The colourful stripes did a great job of masking how thin they are. While the sleek design is perfect for all day comfort, I do question how they will stand the test of time. I guess I will know in a few months of regular use. This won’t matter if you take up a Sockscription because you will always have a fresh supply of new socks. The quality is high enough to not justify this concern, it’s just me and my curious nature.

Striped Business light socks are colourful without being loud. A clever combination of stripes ensures that these socks will go with almost anything.

Cashmere Silk

I was impressed by the smooth feel of the cotton business socks, but I LOVE the feel of the cashmere silk socks. All the sock I tried felt premium, but the cashmere made these socks the perfect blend of sumptuous luxury and all day comfort. The weave appears just as fine as with the regular socks but they are just that bit thicker to provide a cushioned feel.

Decadence vs value

At the time of writing, these luxury socks are £21, which is cheap enough to try just once for one pair. The Starter pack is £209 for 10 pairs which is a tiny saving when you consider you are spending over £200 on socks. Here is my dilemma, I was always taught to invest in the best bed and best shoes you can afford because that’s where you spend most of your life! It wasn’t until wearing these socks that I realise this has to extend to your socks too. For the impact they have on your feet, I’m converted.

If you want to treat yourself – and your feet – to the best socks in the world, try our black cashmere socks. They are 56% cashmere and 25% silk and feel wonderful on your feet.

  • The ultimate in sock luxury
  • Extremely soft and comfortable to wear
  • Toe and heel reinforced with polyamid
  • Hand wash in cool water

Socks have been the one area I must confess I have neglected. I like nice sock patterns, but this is the first time I have invested in genuinely quality socks. I’m disappointed in myself for not doing more about this earlier as the cashmere socks have transformed the experience, even for a pair of my very best handmade shoes!

The subscription model works OK, but it would be nice to have the option of paying monthly like other subscription models. This may be available, but it wasn’t clear to me from the website that it was an option.

That’s a minor niggle as I am going to be buying great socks from now on, so just as well they have the fantastic online store. For more information about Blacksocks follow them here:
